How It Works

Dark Sky Telescope Hire is on a mission to give people in the UK an opportunity to hire small, medium and large aperture telescopes for stargazing.  We have a small but expanding collection of newtonian-style dobsonian telescopes for hire. These include 6″ (150mm), 8″ (200mm), 10″ (250mm) and 12″ (300mm) primary mirror sizes.

If you’re new to astronomy and you’re thinking of buying a telescope for the first time then make us part of your decision-making process. By hiring a telescope for visual astronomy you’ll get a feeling for how telescopes work and what aperture size you need for the views you want to achieve. It’ll also help you on a practical level as you’ll get a good feeling for how well you can move a scope around, and how much space it’ll take up in your home.

Perhaps you already own a telescope and want to try out a larger aperture before buying? No problem. Just hire one of our larger scopes and keep it for 2 weeks to see how you get on with it.

Going to a star party? Planning an astronomy-themed event, or just curious as to what you can see in the night sky with a large telescope? We have telescopes for hire that might just suit.

Our focus is always on value. To buy an 8″ scope with a good selection of eyepieces will set you back in the region of £500-£800. A 12″ with a decent range of eyepieces will cost you upwards of £1000. By choosing Dark Sky Telescope Hire you can get hold of this same aperture for a fraction of the cost.

Here’s how it works:

1 – Start by browsing the telescopes in our rental range. Next to each telescope image is an availability indicator. On each page you’ll also find information about the telescope, what is included in the hire and the hire price. Hire periods are for 2, 5, 7, 14, 21 or 28 nights, and can start on any day of the week or weekend. Nightly telescope hire is also offered where indicated.

2 – When you’ve found a telescope you’d like to hire contact Seb using the telescope booking request form or call 07884 001815. IMPORTANT: By completing the booking request form you agree to our terms and conditions of hire. Please read them before you complete the form or call Seb.

3 – Seb will get back to you asap – normally within 24-48 hours – to confirm your booking request, and to fix a time for you to collect the telescope or to have it delivered to you.

4 – Payments for hire are accepted in cash, cheque or as electronic transfers via Paypal or by bank transfer. Cash payments need to be made at the start of the hire period. Cheque / Paypal / bank transfer payments need to be made at least 24 hours before the start of the hire period.

5 – With the hire telescope we give you everything you need to get started on a  stargazing adventure. We’ll supply the eyepieces for telescope magnification, a guide to what’s up in the sky right now and star maps / directions to help you find constellations and night sky treasures like star clusters, nebulae and distant galaxies.

6 – Enjoy the views of the night sky – and hope for clear skies! Please use the information on this website, especially the astronomy blog posts, to help you get the most out of your time with your hire scope.

7 – Telescopes must be returned on or before the last day of the hire period, either by delivering the telescope back to the hire base from where it was collected, or by arranging for us to collect it from you.
