8″ Skywatcher 200p Dobsonian Reflector

The 8″ Skywatcher 200p dobsonian is the UK’s most popular telescope for visual astronomy. It is easy to handle and highly portable, so you can move it to any location in your garden for the best views of the night sky. The moderate aperture size will reveal stunning detail on Jupiter and Mars when high magnification is used. You’ll also be able to see galaxies, nebulae, comets, star clusters and many thousands of other amazing objects in the night sky.

The picture to right shows how the telescope is set up for observing. It is assembled from two parts: the telescope tube, which weighs just under 9kg, and the circular wooden base, which weighs about 12kg.

Both parts are relatively easy to lift as separate pieces. Tube length is 44 inches, so fits comfortably across the backseat of most small family cars for transportation. The base is 29.5 inches high and has a maximum diameter of 20 inches. The shape of the base makes it relatively easy to place in a car boot or passenger foot well for transportation.

Set up is simple. The tube slots onto the base from above. Moulded side bearings on the tube itself rest on four saddle side bearings on the base. A tension handle is then screwed in on either side. These should be screwed all the way in until there is some resistance in the tube’s forward / backward motion. You’re then ready to observe!

“Thanks very much for the hire. It’s a great service, including all the excellent, detailed guidance in the folder and I’m totally hooked. I can’t wait to get my own scope now! My son loved looking at the moon and Jupiter, and he stayed up late one night to see Saturn too.” Owain John…April 2013
