This April cast your eyes to the sky for the 2013 Lyrids Meteor Shower. The shower, which happens every year when Earth’s orbit crosses the icy debris trail left over by Comet Thatcher in 1861, produces swift and brilliantly bright white meteors that spread across the sky from a radiant near the bright star Vega. Some Lyrid meteors leave long and persistent trails that hang in the sky for seconds at a time.
Meteors from the Lyrids Meteor Shower can be seen during the hours of darkness on any night between 19 April and 25 April. Peak activity for the Lyrids happens on the night of the 21st – 22nd April. After midnight and before daybreak as many as 15 – 25 brilliant white meteors can be seen each hour as our planet pulls through the heart of the debris trail. On some years more can be seen with rates pushing up towards 90 an hour.
When and Where to Look for the 2013 Lyrid Meteor Shower
Lyrid meteors can appear in almost any part of the visible sky. They will however trace back to a radiant in the constellation of Lyra near the bright star Vega. The sky map below should help you work out where you need to look in the night sky to see the Lyrids this year.
The best time to look for the Lyrids is between 11pm on April 21st and 4am on April 22nd. This is when you’ll see the highest rates of Lyrid meteors.
